There’s something so fun about a hibachi-style dinner! You get that delicious combination of sizzling meat, tender vegetables, savory noodles, juicy shrimp, and fluffy white rice—all cooked together with simple sauces that bring everything to life.
The best part? You don’t need a restaurant-style hibachi grill to make this at home. If you have a flat-top grill, this is the perfect recipe for it, but you can absolutely make it in a large cast-iron skillet or heavy skillet right on your stovetop.
I made this dinner with chicken, beef, and shrimp, but you definitely don’t have to make all three. You can choose your favorite protein and make this recipe exactly how your family likes it.
I also love serving mine with both noodles and white rice, because why choose one? But if you prefer, you can easily serve it with just rice or just noodles.
This is one of those meals that is perfect for a busy weeknight, family dinner, or even when you want to make a fun restaurant-style dinner at home. Everything can be prepped ahead of time, so when you’re ready to cook, it’s mostly just a matter of getting everything onto the hot grill.

Ingredients for hibachi style dinner
Protien
Shrimp
You can use raw or cooked shrimp for this recipe. I like marinating the shrimp with freshly grated ginger, fresh garlic, and soy sauce.
If you’re using raw shrimp, make sure they’re peeled and deveined before cooking. Shrimp cook very quickly, so keep an eye on them while they’re on the grill.
If you’re using cooked shrimp, they only need enough time on the hot grill to warm through and pick up some of that delicious garlic, ginger, and soy flavor.
Beef
For the beef, you can use chuck or tenderloin, cut into thin strips.
Tenderloin will give you a very tender result, while chuck can also work beautifully when sliced thinly.
The key is to cut the beef into small, thin strips so they cook quickly and develop those delicious browned edges.
Chicken
I use boneless chicken cut into thin, small strips. Chicken breast works well, but boneless chicken thighs are also delicious if you prefer darker meat.
The chicken is marinated simply with soy sauce, freshly grated ginger, and fresh garlic.
Noodles
You can use practically any noodles you enjoy.
My favorite for this recipe is udon noodles because they’re thick, chewy, and hold onto the sauce beautifully.
Cook your noodles according to the package directions, drain them well, and toss them with a little sesame oil to prevent them from sticking together and to add extra flavor.
White Rice
I like using short-grain white rice or jasmine rice.
Before cooking, wash the rice well and soak it briefly. Drain it, then cook it with hot water until tender and fluffy.
The rice is simple, but it’s an important part of the meal because it balances all those savory flavors from the meat, vegetables, and noodles.
vegetables
This is where you can really make this dinner your own!
Some of my favorite hibachi-style vegetables are:
- Carrots
- Broccoli
- Onions
- Mushrooms
- Baby corn
- Cabbage
You can also use bell peppers, zucchini, snap peas, or whatever vegetables you already have in your fridge.
Try to cut the vegetables into similar-sized pieces so they cook evenly.
Sauces and Seasonings
Soy Sauce
Soy sauce gives the proteins, vegetables, and noodles that classic salty, savory flavor.
Sesame Oil
A little sesame oil adds a delicious nutty aroma and flavor. You don’t need a lot—it can be quite strong.
Teriyaki Sauce
Teriyaki sauce adds sweetness and a beautiful glossy finish to the noodles and proteins.
Use your favorite store-bought teriyaki sauce or homemade version.
Cooking Oil
Use a neutral cooking oil that can handle high heat. You’ll need it to prevent the ingredients from sticking and help everything brown nicely.
For serving
I love finishing this hibachi-style dinner with:
- Sriracha
- Sesame sauce
- Sesame seeds
You can use as much or as little as you like.
If you’re serving this to kids, I recommend keeping the spicy sauces on the side so everyone can customize their own plate.

Homemade teriyaki sauce
This easy homemade teriyaki sauce is sweet, savory, slightly tangy, and has a little kick from Sriracha. It comes together quickly and is perfect for chicken, beef, shrimp, noodles, or vegetables.
Ingredients
½ cup soy sauce
½ cup water or chicken broth
⅓ cup honey
1 tbsp rice vinegar
1 tbsp sesame oil
1 tbsp fresh ginger, minced
1 tsp fresh garlic, minced
1 tsp Sriracha
½ tbsp cornstarch
Instructions
Add the soy sauce, water or chicken broth, honey, rice vinegar, sesame oil, ginger, garlic, and Sriracha to a small saucepan. Whisk to combine.
In a small bowl, mix the cornstarch with a little cold water to make a smooth slurry. Add it to the saucepan and whisk well.
Bring the sauce to a gentle simmer over medium heat, stirring often, until it thickens and becomes glossy.
Remove from the heat and let it cool slightly. Use immediately or store for later.
How to make hibachi style dinner?
1. Prepare the Protein
Cut the chicken and beef into thin strips. Place each protein in a separate bowl and marinate with fresh ginger, minced garlic, and soy sauce. Marinate the shrimp the same way and keep everything refrigerated until ready to cook.
2. Make the Rice
Wash and soak the rice for 5 minutes, then drain. Add hot water and bring to a boil. Cover, reduce the heat to low, and cook for 10 minutes. Turn off the heat and let it sit covered for another 10 minutes. Fluff with a fork.
3. Prepare the Noodles
Cook the noodles according to the package directions. Drain and toss with a little sesame oil.
4. Prepare the Vegetables
Cut your vegetables into bite-sized pieces and have everything ready before you start cooking.
5. Cook the Vegetables & Noodles
Heat a flat-top grill or large skillet and add a little oil. Cook the vegetables on one side and noodles on the other. Season the vegetables with soy sauce. Toss the noodles with sesame oil and teriyaki sauce. Add Sriracha if you like them spicy. Once cooked, transfer to a serving dish.
6. Cook the Proteins
Turn the heat up and add a little more oil. Cook the chicken, beef, and shrimp separately so they have room to brown. The shrimp will cook first, so transfer them as soon as they’re done. Continue cooking the chicken and beef until browned and cooked through.
7. Add the Teriyaki Sauce
Add teriyaki sauce to the cooked chicken and beef and toss until nicely coated and glossy. Transfer to the serving dish.
8. Serve
Serve the chicken, beef, shrimp, vegetables, noodles, and white rice together. Finish with sesame seeds, Sriracha, and sesame sauce. Enjoy your homemade hibachi dinner!

How to Serve Hibachi-Style Dinner?
There are a few ways you can serve this.
Family-Style
Place everything on a large platter or serving board and let everyone help themselves.
This is my favorite way because everyone can choose their favorite protein and vegetables.
Individual Bowls
Start with white rice, then add noodles, vegetables, and your choice of protein.
Finish with sesame seeds, Sriracha, and sesame sauce.
Build-Your-Own Hibachi
This is especially fun for kids.
Put all the ingredients on the table and let everyone make their own bowl.
You can have the sauces on the side so everyone can customize the flavor and spice level.
How to store leftovers?
Allow the cooked food to cool slightly, then transfer it to airtight containers.
Store the chicken, beef, shrimp, vegetables, noodles, and rice in the refrigerator.
For the best quality, enjoy the leftovers within 3–4 days.
If possible, store the sauces separately so you can add fresh sauce when reheating.
How to reheat hibachi style dinner?
You can reheat everything in a skillet or on a flat-top grill.
Add a small splash of water or a little oil to the noodles and rice to prevent them from drying out.
Heat until everything is steaming hot throughout.
For the shrimp, avoid reheating them for too long because they can become rubbery.
You can also microwave individual portions, stirring halfway through heating.
How to Prepare This Dinner Ahead of Time
This recipe is actually great for meal prep because most of the work can be done before dinner time.
Earlier in the Day
You can:
- Cut the chicken.
- Cut the beef.
- Clean and prepare the shrimp.
- Marinate all the proteins.
- Wash and cut the vegetables.
- Cook the rice.
- Cook and drain the noodles.
- Prepare your sauces.
- Set out your serving dishes.
Store the prepared ingredients separately in airtight containers in the refrigerator.
When You’re Ready to Cook
All you have to do is heat the grill, add the vegetables and noodles, then cook the proteins.
This makes the actual dinner preparation much faster.
Can I Prepare the Proteins Ahead of Time?
Yes.
You can cut and marinate the chicken, beef, and shrimp ahead of time.
Keep them separately refrigerated until you’re ready to cook.
For food safety and best quality, don’t leave the raw proteins sitting at room temperature while preparing the rest of the meal.
Can I make the rice ahead of time?
Absolutely.
Rice can be cooked ahead of time and refrigerated.
When storing cooked rice, cool it promptly and refrigerate it in a shallow airtight container.
When you’re ready to serve, reheat it thoroughly until steaming hot.
Frequently asked questions
Can I make this without a flat-top grill?
Absolutely! A large cast-iron or heavy skillet works perfectly. Cook in batches if needed.
Do I have to make all three proteins?
No! Use chicken, beef, shrimp, or any combination you like.
Can I use frozen or cooked shrimp?
Yes. Thaw frozen shrimp and pat dry before cooking. Cooked shrimp only need to be heated through, so be careful not to overcook them.
Can I use different vegetables?
Definitely! Use any vegetables your family enjoys.
Can I skip the noodles or rice?
Of course! Serve it with just rice, just noodles, or both.
Can I make it spicy?
Yes! Add Sriracha to the noodles or serve it on the side.
What noodles work best?
Udon is my favorite, but lo mein, yakisoba, ramen, or even spaghetti work too.
Can I use chicken thighs?
Yes! Chicken thighs stay juicy and work beautifully. Just cut them into small, thin pieces.
Tips and Tricks
Get the Grill Hot
A hot cooking surface is key to getting those delicious browned edges.
Don’t add everything to a cold grill.
Don’t Overcrowd the Grill
If you add too much food at once, the ingredients will release moisture and steam instead of browning.
Cook in batches if necessary.
Cut Everything Small
Thin, bite-sized pieces cook much faster and make the dinner easier to eat.
Keep Your Proteins Separate
Chicken, beef, and shrimp don’t all cook at the same speed.
Keeping them separate allows you to remove each one as soon as it’s done.
Shrimp Cook Fast
Don’t walk away from the shrimp!
They can go from perfectly cooked to overcooked very quickly.
Use Fresh Garlic & Ginger
Freshly grated ginger and fresh garlic make a big difference in this recipe.
They give the proteins that delicious hibachi-style flavor.
Don’t Go Overboard With Sesame Oil
Sesame oil has a strong flavor, so a little goes a long way.
Have Everything Ready Before You Start
This is probably my biggest tip.
Once the grill is hot, things move quickly. Have your vegetables chopped, noodles cooked, sauces open, and proteins marinated before you start cooking.
Serve the Sauces on the Side
This makes the meal perfect for a family because everyone can add as much or as little sauce as they like.
Final thought for hibachi style dinner
This hibachi-style dinner is one of those meals that looks impressive but is actually so easy to make at home.
You get juicy chicken, flavorful beef, tender shrimp, colorful vegetables, saucy noodles, and fluffy rice all in one dinner—and everyone can build their plate exactly the way they like it.
And honestly, you don’t need to make all three proteins. Sometimes I’ll make just chicken, sometimes shrimp, and when I’m feeding a crowd, I love doing all three.
The best part is that there really aren’t many rules here. Use the vegetables you love, choose your favorite protein, make rice or noodles—or both—and adjust the sauces to your taste.
It’s basically your own little hibachi restaurant right at home!
